Eluracat™ (capromorelin oral solution)

Eluracat is a first-in-class therapy specifically indicated to support weight gain in cats experiencing poor appetite or unintended weight loss resulting from chronic medical conditions, including kidney disease.

Eluracat FAQs

What is the active ingredient of Eluracat?

Capromorelin tartrate.

How does Eluracat work?

Capromorelin is a selective ghrelin receptor agonist. Capromorelin binds to ghrelin receptors in the hypothalamus to stimulate appetite and in the pituitary to stimulate secretion of growth hormone (GH). Increased GH stimulates release of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) from the liver, which in turn stimulates weight gain.
The clinical effects of capromorelin in cats are a combination of increased food intake and metabolic changes resulting in weight gain.

Which cats could benefit from Eluracat?

Eluracat is indicated for cats with poor appetite or unintended weight loss linked to chronic medical conditions. Weight loss affects a large proportion of cats with chronic medical conditions such as4,5:
  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD)
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Chronic gastrointestinal disease
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Cancer
In CKD, weight loss occurs before, and accelerates after, diagnosis5. Lower body weight is associated with shorter survival times.4 By selectively targeting ghrelin receptors, Eluracat stimulates appetite and brings about positive metabolic changes that lead to weight gain.

How soon after the initial administration of Eluracat can I expect a cat to eat?

Eluracat contains capromorelin, a ghrelin receptor agonist. Appetite is stimulated when capromorelin binds to receptors in the hypothalamus. In studies, maximum serum concentrations of capromorelin generally occured 30-60 minutes post oral administration.
The results of studies demonstrate that capromorelin increases appetite and body weight in healthy cats. It was observed that the mean food intake at 6 hours post dose was significantly increased from baseline measurements.6
Eluracat offers more than just appetite support. Its key benefit lies in the positive metabolic changes it induces, specifically by increasing protein uptake into cells.6 These positive changes are sustained as long as Eluracat is administered.
Ghrelin receptors have been identified in the salivary glands of humans, suggesting that hypersalivation may represent a normal physiological response to oral administration in some cats.7

How common is hypersalivation and how can I help owners to manage it?

Eluracat is an oral solution that contains capromorelin, a ghrelin receptor agonist. It is specifically designed for cats and is intended for long-term use to promote weight gain in cats with chronic underlying medical conditions.
In the pivotal field study, Eluracat was administered to CKD cats with concurrent weight loss. Hypersalivation occurred in ~1 in 5 cats in the treatment group, was transient, occurred at the time of dosing and did not affect efficacy.
