Tissue Non-Irritating Local Anaesthetic
COMPOSITION
Prilocaine hydrochloride 20 mg/mL
ACTIONS
Prilocaine is a tissue nonirritating local anaesthetic of the amide type which is used for surface, regional and epidural anaesthesia. Prilocaine has a similar time of onset and potency to lignocaine but is some 40% less toxic, thus having a broader safety margin. Prilocaine has very little vasodilator activity but can be used with adrenaline at a maximum of 1 in 200,000. It has a greater duration of action than lignocaine, however the addition of adrenaline produces a comparable duration. When used as a diagnostic nerve block in horses for regional and intra-articular anaesthesia, prilocaine leaves little or no inflammatory reaction after injection.
INDICATIONS
Local anaesthetic and nerve block for use in small and large animals. Diagnostic nerve block in horses.
PRESENTATION
Injection (sterile multidose vial): 100 mL.
STORAGE
Store below 30° C (room temperature). Protect from light.
WARNINGS
Local anaesthetics react with certain metals and cause the release of their respective ions which, if injected, may cause severe local irritation. Therefore avoid prolonged contact between prilocaine solution and metal surfaces (cannulas, syringes with metal parts, etc.).
